Cumberland Island is the only undeveloped barrier island on the Georgia coast. No bridges, no roads, no cell service. Visitors are limited, and they arrive by boat.
In 1825, a planter named John Gray bought five hundred acres there. Andrew Carnegie’s younger brother bought the island and his family later built a grand mansion, Dungeness — fifty-nine rooms, turrets, thirty-seven thousand square feet, and a staff to match. They built Greyfield too, a quieter home on Gray’s old field. Today Dungeness is a ruin. Greyfield is still standing.
I used to live across the water in Fernandina Beach. The name came home with me. Far from the crowd is where we do our best work.
